Week 5

Well its been almost two weeks since I hurt my rib training and guess what, it still hurts. In fact it feels about the same as it did the day after it happened. I have been trying to work on drills at home but as soon as I start breathing heavy it really flares up. Im not sure if I am helping myself or hurting myself by trying to exercise through it. I waited 4 days before I started doing anything active again. I guess I will pick up a few BJJ dvd's to watch while I wait to get back to class. Im thinking I will pick up Mario Sperry Master Series 1 and Pedro Carvalho 1. Those seem to be the highest rated online.

I am hoping I can start going back to class within the next couple weeks but only time will tell if that will be possible or not.

Week 3

Well week 3 was cut short. Monday night i either broke a rib or tore cartilage. So I won't be training for a while. I am still not sure how it happened. We were doing a drill and I started on my opponents back and he was trying to escape. I had his back and he rollled me over, scooted his hips out and turned when all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain just to the right of my heart. I thought I just got the wind knocked out of me and sat for a few minutes but didnt feel any better. I sat the rest of the class out as it felt like i was being stabbed every time i breathed. Im not sure whether it is cracked or not but it is still very sore a week later. So after doing some reading online I found people said it can take up to 6 months to heal if its cartilage, so I am actually hoping its a cracked rib which will heal faster. This is really going to screw up my training and its going to cost me a lot in training fees since i already paid for the year and wont be attending for possibly a month or longer. So in short im not real happy about the situation. More to come...

Week two

So my second week went pretty well. The one night of sparring really improved my ability to pass the guard which has helped a lot with our nightly drills at technique classes. I also learned my first lesson of BJJ and that is that it isn't necessarily about submitting your opponent as much as it is about constantly improving you position. Escaping from dominated positions without getting submitted has become my number one goal for now. I am always ending up in bad position right now and I keep getting submitted which is quite annoying. Hopefully attending some more sparring classes will help me work on my escapes. til next week.

The end of my first week

So I got my first week of training under my belt and went to my first sparring session. It was probably a little early to start sparring but I went anyway. It was difficult to say the least and I only lasted and hour of the two hours of sparring. The blue belts and purple belts gave me a lot of great instruction that should speed up my learning. Working with the white belts on the other hand is quite different, they wanted to try every move they knew on me cause they knew they would work farily easily. Plus you also get the white belts that think they are part of ufc 50 or something going as hard as possible. Which is fine until someone forces the armbar and pops my arm cause they went full on popping their hips into it. All in all it was a good first week and I look forward to many more.
